Knowledge Forum: Tolan, Bleidorn and Allemeyer answer questions from the support group

Goettingen. It will be inaugurated with a ceremony on May 31st and will open to the public on June 4th: The Knowledge Forum. On Thursday evening in Paulinerkirche, members of the Science Museum support group had another opportunity to talk with University President Metin Tolan and current project manager Marie Louisa Allemeyer about the knowledge forum and the new organizational structure. The new scientific director of the Knowledge Forum, Christoph Bleidorn, professor and head of the department “Animal Evolution and Biodiversity” at the University of Göttingen, was there for the first time.

In the support group, you would have “thought until the end of May – they will never succeed”, opened the evening board member Wolfgang Meyer. But now it looks good. 98 percent of the building is finished and are also at 80 percent when the facility was introduced, Allemeyer said. For the head of the Central Guardianship, who helped design the project from the beginning and fought for its realization for many years, the evening was a “special opportunity”. On the one hand, because she has known many of her support group colleagues for years. On the other hand, because exactly ten years ago, according to Allemeyer, the work for the exhibition “Things of Knowledge” was about to be completed. This exhibition spurred a lot, made a lot possible.

Good base created

What motivates scientists, what hinders them, how do they work? Allemeyer, who is moving to the open-air museum in Detmold this summer, once again outlined the basis of the concept for the knowledge forum. Everyone involved worked hard for him and created a very good foundation. The foundation is as good as a beacon can be, Allemeyer said, providing guidance and inspiration to other universities, for example.

This is where the concern expressed by some members of the support group begins. Some continue to be critical of integration into another institution, the Lower Saxony State and University Library (SUB). The initial access was wide, but now the forum is being “inserted into the wall”. The Knowledge Forum deserves its position in scientific communication, perhaps even its foundation, said one member. It is unfortunate that he is not independent and that Allemeyer will not run such an independent institution.

The concept will not change, assured the president of Tolan University. The integration of the science museum into the SUB was about ensuring that operations had to be guaranteed. And SUB is the institution at the university that can do that. “I will not interfere in the knowledge forum,” Bleidorn said. He had previously pointed out to members of the support group that he would become director of the three-pillar forum Museum of Science, Museum of Biodiversity and the Thomas Oppermann Cultural Forum, each of which would have its own management.

Campus board

In the future, the Knowledge Forum will advise the campus committee with experts from the university and the Max Planck Institute. The scientific exhibition versus the Knowledge forum is partially polarized, Bleidorn said. However, according to him, the question does not arise at all. The building at the train station provides ample space for both. The forum does not completely fill the building, Tolan added. There is more room for other uses.

Afterwards, members of the support group were able to view part of the exhibition at the Knowledge Forum. The support group presented a 30,000 euro check to Forum Knowledge. The money will be used to finance lighting signage in the building.
