In the fourth final of the top five series for the German championship, the Allianz MTV Stuttgart women won 3-2 in Potsdam. This will decide the title in Sunday’s fifth game.
In an exciting game over five sets, the Stuttgart volleyball team triumphed over Potsdam, who with a victory today could have secured the champion title. MTV equalized by winning the “tie-break” in the best series from five to 2-2 and thus saved itself in the fifth and decisive match on Sunday.
Stuttgart gets the first set after a bumpy start
After the disappointing loss in the “tie-break” on Wednesday, the women of Stuttgart were under a lot of pressure in Potsdam. Tore Aleksandersen’s team was clearly worried about winning the match in the first minutes. In front of about 2,000 spectators at the MBS Arena sold out, the hosts got off to a better start and quickly took a 6: 3 lead. After the surprise victory in Stuttgart, the women of Potsdam played free and kept the lead of three points – 10: 7. But then MTV got better into the game and managed to equalize at 13:13. After that, a balanced game took place in which no team could really pull off. With the result 20:19, the women from Stuttgart reached the first lead. But the first set remained exciting until the end. In the end it was Krystal Rivers who converted the first ball for Stuttgart to 25:23.
Potsdam easily wins the second set
The second set showed a similar picture as at the beginning of the first. Thanks to the high efficiency in the attack, Potsdam again took the lead with 6: 3. After long rallies and strong defenses from both sides, the hosts managed to increase their advantage to six points – 9: 3. But then the women from Stuttgart came together and reduced the deficit to 8:11, also thanks to some mistakes by the women from Potsdam. The Stuttgart team could not get closer, despite an excellent defense by Libera Roosa Koskelo. Stuttgart tried to keep up the pressure, but the locals stayed calm and increased the lead to 24:18. MTV was able to avoid the first ball of the set, but Potsdam turned the second into 25:19.
Allianz MTV wins Crime in the third set
And in the third set, the guests from Stuttgart initially struggled and were left behind 4: 7. After the despair was slowly spreading on MTV, Tore Aleksandersten Julia Nowicka entered, who made the Stuttgart match good. After a strong block by the Pole and the fifth mistake of admission by the women from Potsdam, Stuttgart managed to tie 15:16. Simone Lee scored with a very strong service to score 19:19. It was the sixth ace for MTV. And with the shot, the guests took the lead for the first time. A thriller took place, as in the first sentence. But this time, MTV lost its first point set and second, Timerman’s service, also went off. Stuttgart then used the third and took the third set with 26:24.
Potsdam wins the fourth set
At the beginning of the fourth set, the women from Stuttgart got nervous again and quickly reached 0: 4 behind. The Potsdam women adapted well to the MTV game and smoothed River’s attacks with solid blocks. But even the women from Stuttgart showed a good performance in defense and fought until 9:11 with four points in a row. At this stage, the women from Potsdam made many mistakes in the service, which enabled the women of Stuttgart to approach at 16:18. And yet the hosts fought for the lead 24:18. MTV bounced off the first set ball while Potsdam turned it into the second goal to win the set 25:19. Like Wednesday, the taj-breuk started.
MTV keeps its nerves and saves its chances for the championship
In the decisive fifth set, Stuttgart started better. As in the whole match, Maria Segura showed a strong performance and gave her team a 2-1 lead. After a temporary 5: 1 lead, Potsdam managed to equalize at 5: 5. In an exciting final stage with a change of lead, the women from Potsdam took the lead 14:13, but then lost two game points and the chance to win the title directly. Stuttgart, on the other hand, converted the first point of the match at 17:15 and thus remain in the race for the championship. The grand final takes place on Sunday (19:15) in Stuttgart.
